On our way back to town we resumed our city tour. From the quays we passed the replica of the Statue of Liberty in front of the Eiffel Tower. Then it was through the tunnel where Princess Diana died, with the flame memorial directly above it (it was here before but has become a shrine to her).
We turned north into the Place de la Concorde for another view of the obelisk and the Champs Elysees and then in front of La Madeleine, a replica of a Roman temple that is now a catholic Church.
Many of the fashion houses like Chanel and Gucci are in the Opéra district behind Concorde. There are two opera houses in Paris butthis one is the most famous. It was built by Garnier and is the scene of Phantom of the Opera.
Natalie Portman met her husband here filming Black Swan and lives her still. Also in this area are the famous department stores Galeries Lafayette and au Printemps.
Place Vendome is connected via Rue de la Paix, famous for dance shops and famous jewelers like Cartier and Tiffany's. In the Place Vendome is a statue commemorating the battle of Austerlitz. Also in this square is the house where Chopin died, the Chanel boutique, and the Ritz Hotel where Proncess Diana stayed before she died. Coco Chanel also lived in the hotel and invented her signature perfume.
From here we are heading into the Montmartre area, the artist district at the end of the 19th century. We are going to stop there and see Sacre Coeur so I will be back with more later.
