The Anjou Region and Bourgeuil

On our way out of Azay we drove through the Anjou region. This area is renowned for its wines and vineyards and in particular the red wine. It also is home to orchards for pears and apples.

We learned about winemaking and different types of wines (well those who weren't asleep on the bus did). Sometimes as many as 12 types of grapes are in one bottle! We learned the year is more important than the type of grape.

We stopped in the small town of Bourgeuil. This town is not a typical tourist stop and in fact there was nowhere to park the bus so we just hopped out on a side road. This is truly experiencing France off the beaten path!

Froggy explained how the signs coming out of the buildings come from Middle Ages when people couldn't read but used them to indicate where they lived or what type of business was inside. In town, we saw a true French market with everything from cookware to clothes to fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, pasta and sweets. Most towns have market one day a week. I loved this experience for the kids because it is just so typical of daily French life. Our kids do a little shopping then stopped for lunch at various places. Here are a few photos from the market.

And of course a few Macarons from the patisserie...

I bought some cheese at the market for our students to try - many liked it and I was so excited they were open to trying it!

And of course our new favorite food, Macarons... Krista bought out their inventory!
