St Malo

St Malo sits in the Brittany region bordering on the Atlantic ocean and English channel. The town was started by a monk who built his church here. It grew into a fishing center and is best known as the launching port for privateers, who are government sponsored pirates who attack enemies of the King.

During World War II the city was completely destroyed and then later rebuilt to the exact same shape, architecture and layout in the 40s and 50s which gives the impression it is still intact from the Middle Ages. The architecture here has granite rather than the limestone of the Loire Valley. The roofs are all steeply pitched for the amount of rain this region gets.

The ramparts surrounding the city are thick and walkable. The English often attached this city but were not successful at anything besides killing a cat, so the legend goes. Jacques Cartier (the explorer, not the jeweler) was born here and is buried here also in a church in the city center.

We are off on a scavenger hunt now!
