I have been looking forward to this so much because it is one of the few places I have not been! Plus if you haven’t picked up on it yet I’m a huge fan of the royal family and this is such an important site for them.
You know it’s classy when your entrance wristbands are made of stain ribbon! We also had to go through airport style security.
The castle has a dry moat because it’s built in a chalk hill which wouldn’t hold water. It is now a beautiful garden. The hill containing this tower was completely man made. It houses historical documents and relics that are free from dampness. The beautiful garden down below was full of blooming daffodils!
In the stones the mortar is full of little stones of flint (sharp, common wherever you find chalk). It’s like making your walls out of razor blades so intruders would have cut their hands if they tried to climb the wall. Since it’s also shiny when first cut, it would glisten one the sun like a glittering castle on the hill.
The chapel of St George is down on the right. This is where Harry and Meghan got married. 10 monarchs are buried here including Charles I who was executed during the Civil War (after his head was seen back on, because there was a spare place next to Henry the VIII’s tomb.) Because there is a funeral today for a member of the castle staff we are unable to go inside , or even down closer to the chapel until it was almost time to go.
Windsor is unique in having 3 wards, which are defensive compounds surrounding the central tower. The area across this lawn is the royal apartments. After the wedding Meghan and Harry came into this area, through the brown doors, into the carriage and out the long path into the town. The entire royal family has apartments here, apartments for visiting heads of state, and other dignitaries.
From the terrace you can see the countryside and the chapel at Eton, the most exclusive boarding school in the country (Will and Harry’s Alma mater).
From this point we headed inside to tour the State Apartments. Unfortunately there is no photos inside but it was AMAZING! So much gold and tapestry and hearing the stories of the fire that almost burned Windsor Castle to the ground in the 1990s was fascinating. We got to see the Green Room where Meghan and Harry’s wedding photos and Archie’ christening photos were taken. We also got to see the St James banqueting room where Harry and Meghan introduces Archie, and the garter throne where the Queen knights people. I absolutely loved this stop!!
