Fondue was born was born in the Switzerland as well as another dish called “rackette” where cheese is melted and served over warm potatoes, ham, and pickles. This shop sells “cheese pies” which are a common snack here - alas, it was closed!
This is the first jail in Lucerne and it has now become a hotel. Apparently the rooms inside really look like cells!
This is one of the most beautiful squares in Lucerne. In one corner there’s a hotel with an outside mural of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, one of the most famous German writers. In another is a fountain with a man holding a swan, another one of the symbols of Lucerne.
The public water in Lucerne is very clean and water is readily accessible through the city. All of the public fountains make for a free and clean water source for its citizens. We stopped in this square to have our students take a drink and fill their water bottles. Some were more adventurous than others!
We passed several other squares with religious murals representing various scenes from the Bible. For 200 years, one of these squares was home to days-long recreations of the passion of the Christ. The square was originally a fish market, then a wine market, and now is another one of the beautiful public squares in Lucerne.
Next step was on a bridge over the river with views in both directions of the wooden bridges from the medieval ages. This is another one of the symbols of Lucerne because it’s one of the few bridges that are made of wood and it’s on a diagonal. It was built in 1333 but in 1993 there was a huge fire and it was destroyed. It took a year and millions of euros to be repaired, but it did reopen a year later. Inside of the roof of both bridges there are all kinds of medieval paintings depicting very torturous scenes!
Our last stop was the Jesuit Church overlooking the river. Service was in process but we stoppped in for a Quick Look and it was beautiful!
While waiting for the walk to dinner we had some great chill time on the steps enjoying the beauty of this city!
